How to repair a freezer
It is impossible to prepare for breakdowns of household appliances - it breaks down at the most inopportune moment. The hostess is especially discouraged by the moment when the freezer does not work. After all, all the products stored in it, for example, meat, fish or ice cream, can deteriorate. Fortunately, in many cases it is possible to repair a freezer with your own hands with some knowledge and tools.
The reason for the appearance of malfunctions in the freezer can be either very simple and banal, or quite serious, which cannot be solved without the help of a specialist. From the owners of this household appliances, you can hear the following complaints:
freezer not working
the freezer has stopped freezing;
the freezer does not turn off;
The device turns on and then immediately turns off.
Freezer not working
Simple Causes of Faults
In the case when the freezing unit does not turn on, one should not immediately draw hasty conclusions and think that it is broken. The search for a problem should be carried out from simple to complex.
Checking the outlet
The first step is to pay attention to the serviceability of the mains plug, electrical cable and the outlet itself. It is possible that the wires were disconnected from the terminals in the socket or plug, or there was a break in the cable cores, and this caused the freezer to not work. Check the voltage in the network, if it is lowered, the device will not turn on.
Cord and plug freezer
To test the outlet, plug any other electrical appliance into it. If it works, then look for the reason in the fork. If the plug is OK, ring the cable with a tester. Also, if the light inside does not light up when the machine is connected to the network, this indicates a cable damage. To check the voltage in the network, use a multimeter. The machine requires 110V to start.
Incorrectly set mode
If you have a suspicion that the freezer does not turn off, it is recommended to observe the operation of the device for some time. Normally, he should work in the “one to two” mode, for example, he works for 10 minutes - he rests for 20 minutes. Also, the time may increase if the capacity of the unit is half empty, or the temperature in the room is very high. But, when your observations have confirmed that the device does not even think of turning off, or the camera turned off after a long period of time, pay attention to the following points.
The best option for the temperature inside the freezer tank is considered to be from +2 to 0 ° F. At higher values, the machine will work without interruption. Therefore, even if the room is hot, you should not set too low a temperature on the thermostat. It will be easier for the device to maintain the microclimate in the chamber at a standard level than to achieve inflated performance. Also make sure that refrigeration equipment is not close to heating appliances.
Also, for example, in the Electrolux brand freezer, the timer is sometimes jammed when the “defrost” mode is set. In this case, the unit does not turn on. But if you turn the ratchet a few degrees, the device starts to work. The defect with the timer is due to the fact that the gears are jammed in the clockwork. In the Electrolux model, this problem with the timer is also present.
Deterioration of seals on the door
Over time, with prolonged use of the freezer, the rubber seal on the door may crack, deform, exfoliate or rub. As a result, the door does not fit snugly, the internal capacity of the device is not cooled enough, due to the constant leakage of cold, the compressor works without stopping and wears out quickly.
A Frigidaire freezer will leave you with no chance of missing a wear pad. If you see that the red light is on, it means that the temperature in the chamber is rising (possibly due to a poor fit of the door). If the green light is on, it means that the temperature has returned to normal. If you find the wear of the seal and the fact that the unit does not freeze well, try to replace the rubber gasket as soon as possible.
Parts are out of order
If the situations listed above are excluded, and the freezer still does not work, then some structural element has failed.
Compressor
If the equipment does not cool well enough, the engine turns on for a few seconds, then turns off or does not work at all, then the compressor is most likely the source of the problem. Or one of them if the device has independent cameras.
Causes of compressor failure:
the starting relay has failed;
the load on the engine is exceeded;
the starter winding is broken;
natural wear.
If, when you turn on the refrigerator, clicks are heard or a clear smell of burning is felt, then the matter is in the protective relay or starter, respectively. During the summer months in kitchens without air conditioning, the engine can overheat if the thermostat is turned to full power. The best solution would be to replace the old compressor with a new one.
Freon leak
If the refrigerator does not turn on after a long period of inactivity, while the indicator is on, the case may have been damaged, and as a result, a refrigerant leak has occurred. Most often this happens when the user intervenes in the defrosting procedure: breaking off ice from the walls of the chambers, installing containers with hot water, etc. In models of the past generation, such methods worked quite successfully, while the new technique is extremely picky about such a radical interference in the natural operation of systems. Holes and cracks could also appear as a result of transporting equipment.
The problem of freon leakage is typical for equipment with a drip cooling system and with a lower freezer. Budget devices are equipped with thin tubes with a mediocre coating, and it is quite easy to damage them.
This problem can be solved both by soldering individual parts, and by replacing them. After that, the required amount of refrigerant is added for the normal operation of the system.
Control module
The main board is checked last, because it fails much less often. Almost every modern refrigerator is equipped with a control module. Damage to individual elements can affect the operation of all systems: insufficient freezing, incorrect indication, frequency of starting the engine with a compressor, etc.
The problem can be eliminated by flashing the module, having a laptop, software and a special adapter on hand, or completely changing the main board. In both cases, it is better to put it on the shoulders of specialists.
Failure Prevention
Following simple recommendations will help to avoid most technical troubles and will help extend the life of refrigeration equipment.
Preventive measures:
- do not put hot products in the chambers, only at room temperature;
- before de-energizing the refrigerator, set the thermostat value to 0;
- there is no need to artificially speed up the defrosting process;
- do not turn on the equipment after downtime if liquid has accumulated in it;
- The doors must always fit snugly against the body.
Before turning on the new model for the first time, it is clearly useful to carefully read the instructions, because each technology on board requires compliance with certain operating conditions.
